Working out your interior design style can feel like a difficult task. With so many styles to choose from, how do you settle on one, and what if it no longer suits you a few years later? These are our suggestions for finding a style that lasts.
The first step is research. That can mean anything from looking through magazines and saving images online to walking through your own neighbourhood and noticing which homes catch your eye. Once you have an idea of what you like, you can begin to narrow the options.
What do you like? Do you prefer clean lines and a minimal aesthetic, or are you drawn to more ornate, traditional designs? Do you prefer bright, bold colours or more subdued tones? Questions like these help you identify the style that is right for you.
Your lifestyle matters as much as your taste. If you have small children or pets, for example, it is wise to avoid delicate materials and furniture that is easily damaged. If you entertain often, the design should allow for plenty of seating and surface space.
Once you have settled on a style, it is worth making sure it will not go out of fashion in a few years, so that you are not starting again when the next trend arrives. Choosing classic pieces, which can be refreshed with new accessories or a change of paint colour, helps achieve this.
Finding your interior design style does not have to be difficult. With these steps, you can find a style that suits both your taste and your lifestyle.
